Instagram is gearing up to officially launch its much-anticipated standalone video editing app, Edits, with the rollout expected in the coming weeks, according to platform head Adam Mosseri.

Originally slated for a March release, Edits is designed as Instagram’s answer to TikTok’s CapCut—a dedicated creation tool offering enhanced editing features for Reels and short-form video content. Mosseri confirmed that the app is currently in beta testing, with a select group of creators using it ahead of a broader release. The upcoming launch will feature an initial, simplified version of the app, with more advanced tools to follow in future updates.

On the subject of pricing, Mosseri clarified that Edits will be free to use. However, he noted that some premium features may eventually require payment, particularly those leveraging AI technology that demands substantial computing power.

Edits will be free. I think over time, we might have some paid features where we’re going to need to cover costs of things, like compute for big AI features. But in general, we want to create as many features that are free as possible, because the more people can create, the more they will create, the better Instagram will be, and the more we will all benefit,” Mosseri said.

Instagram has already previewed a few of these AI-powered tools, such as AI-generated backgrounds and animated still images, hinting that more advanced functionalities will live within Edits rather than the main Instagram app. These capabilities may eventually be locked behind a subscription or premium tier.

While Meta has not revealed an official launch date, the public release of Edits is expected very soon, as beta testing winds down and the app nears completion.
