MTR Foods is looking at the familiar act of giving sweets through a different lens this festive season. With its new campaign, ‘India’s Sweetest Language’, the brand explores how mithai often says what words cannot, from affection and blessings to invitations and celebrations.

At the heart of the campaign is an illustrated book that brings together words and phrases used when sharing sweets across different Indian languages. Expressions such as ‘Ek aur lo’, ‘Olleyadagali’ and ‘Aavta rehjo’ are presented through limericks and everyday festive situations, highlighting how their meaning can extend beyond the literal words when accompanied by a box of sweets.

The idea is brought to life further through a digital film centred on a young girl who discovers the book at a festive community gathering. As she turns its pages, the expressions unfold through scenes of family reunions, care and blessings, turning familiar phrases into visual moments.

The campaign also ties into MTR’s expanded sweets portfolio. Alongside existing offerings such as Mysore Pak, Gulab Jamun and Coconut Burfi, the brand is introducing products featuring ingredients including ghee, jaggery and dates, along with new formats.

Anupam Nair, chief marketing and growth officer, MTR Foods, said: “India is incredibly diverse, and that diversity is reflected in how we express emotion. Yet, during the festive season, sweets become a universal language of affection. When someone you love wants to say, ‘I care for you,’ they often won’t say it in words, they’ll simply hand you a sweet.

That’s the idea behind lines like ‘Kitna Dubla Ho Gaya’, less about how you look and more about saying ‘I love you’ without saying it. At the same time, while consumers hold on to the tradition and ethos of traditional sweets, they’re also seeking more varied experiences. That’s what shaped this campaign, as we expand our portfolio with new, exciting offerings like building out our world of Gulab Jamun and reimagining a classic like Mysore Pak in a more portion-controlled format for today’s consumer. Through this campaign, we wanted to celebrate a tradition that has always existed while showing that sweets truly are a language of their own.”

Soumabha Nandi, executive vice president, Creative & Strategy, Social Panga, the creative agency behind the campaign, said: “Good narratives live around us. That’s where the insight behind MTR’s India’s Sweetest Language was found, hiding in ordinary moments. Think about it, why do we carry sweets when we visit someone? Why does good news almost automatically call for a box of mithai? The behaviour already existed; we simply recognised it as a language in itself.

Our task was not to invent a new story, but to uncover one that Indians have been speaking for generations. Strategically, we also didn’t want to limit the idea to a commercial film. That’s where we, at Social Panga, collaborated with MTR to create a book, something that would document this vocabulary and give the idea a life beyond the campaign.”

The campaign will extend across creator collaborations, digital storytelling and on-ground activations, further exploring the role sweets play in festive occasions.

With ‘India’s Sweetest Language’, MTR is building its festive campaign around a behaviour that already exists in Indian homes, using the many ways people offer sweets to tell a larger story about how affection and celebration are often expressed without being spoken.
