A creative pause can sometimes lead to an unexpected breakthrough, and Taj Mahal Tea is building its latest brand story around that very idea. Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea, owned by Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), has brought Oscar and Grammy-winning composer A.R. Rahman on board as its brand ambassador, unveiling a new campaign platform titled ‘Awaken Your Masterpiece’.
The association takes the brand back to one of its most recognisable territories: music. With a legacy shaped by the ‘Hazaaron Mein Ek’ positioning and the iconic ‘Wah Taj!’ tagline, Taj Mahal Tea has long connected its identity with artistic expression, craftsmanship and excellence. Rahman’s musical journey and international recognition give the brand a new face for this continuing association.
The campaign film takes a simple everyday ritual and places it within the creative process. It opens with Rahman experiencing a creative block, struggling to find inspiration. A freshly brewed cup of Taj Mahal Tea offers a moment to pause and step away from the pressure of creating. As the moment unfolds, he finds a renewed sense of clarity, eventually composing an uplifting melody that ends with the familiar ‘Wah Taj!’ expression.
Rather than presenting tea simply as a beverage, the film explores the idea of taking a break as part of the journey towards creativity. It connects the act of slowing down with the possibility of discovering fresh ideas, bringing the campaign’s central thought, ‘Awaken Your Masterpiece’, into focus.
Ishtpreet Singh, VP – Beverages, HUL, said the partnership builds on a musical association that has been central to the brand for decades, beginning with tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and the iconic ‘Wah Taj!’ campaign.
“Over decades, Taj Mahal Tea and music have been inseparable, a bond that began with the legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain and the iconic ‘Wah Taj!’. As we carry that legacy forward, there could be no better custodian than A.R. Rahman, an artist whose genius is truly one in a thousand,” Singh said.
He further drew a parallel between the brand’s approach to selecting and blending tea leaves and Rahman’s pursuit of finding the perfect note in music, connecting the two through their shared emphasis on precision and excellence.
For the creative team, Rahman’s association also represents a natural continuation of the brand’s established identity. Harshad Rajadhyaksha and Kainaz Karmakar, Group Chief Creative Officers at Ogilvy India, said: “Music and Taj Mahal Chai have been inseparable. It has been a beautiful journey of building a brand with music at its core and we’re thrilled to partner with A.R. Rahman this year. The brand story of finesse and the search for excellence sits really well with everything that A.R. Rahman stands for,” they said.
The campaign has been conceptualised by Ogilvy India, with the creative team led by Fritz Gonsalves and Jayesh Raut. Prakash Varma of Nirvana Films has directed the brand film, continuing his association with Taj Mahal Tea’s visual identity that spans more than a decade.
With ‘Awaken Your Masterpiece’, Taj Mahal Tea is doing more than introducing a new celebrity association. It is revisiting a brand territory that has remained part of its identity while giving it a contemporary creative angle. Rahman’s involvement strengthens the connection with music, but the campaign’s more interesting proposition is its focus on the value of stepping back before moving forward. In a category where everyday consumption often takes centre stage, the brand is using a familiar tea ritual to build an emotional narrative around inspiration, patience and artistic expression. The challenge will be to make this idea resonate beyond the campaign film and become a lasting part of how consumers experience the brand.
