Adidas has marked the end of Lionel Messi’s Argentina chapter with a film that lets the footballer look back on his journey in the national shirt in his own words. Released after Messi’s final appearance for Argentina, the film brings together moments from across his international career, from his early days as a young player carrying a nation’s expectations to the captain who eventually lifted the FIFA World Cup.
Rather than leaning on career statistics or a conventional highlight reel, the film uses Messi’s narration to turn the campaign into a personal farewell. Over footage spanning his Argentina journey, he says: “The moment has arrived. I leave in peace. I gave it my all. This jersey was my dream. My pride. And my life. Thank you for loving me so much. I will always carry you with me.”
The emotional weight of the film comes from the journey it revisits. Messi’s international career was shaped by years of scrutiny and comparisons with Diego Maradona, particularly as Argentina waited for another major international title.
That changed with the 2021 Copa América victory, followed by the Finalissima in 2022 and Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar later that year. The World Cup win became the defining moment of Messi’s international career, completing a journey that had previously been marked by near misses and intense expectations.
The farewell also closes a chapter in one of football’s longest-running athlete-brand partnerships. Adidas signed Messi as a teenager and has remained closely associated with his career as he evolved from a promising young player into one of the sport’s most recognisable names.
