Instagram Experiments with ‘Lockable’ Posts for Exclusive Content Access

Instagram is testing a new feature that could bring a fresh layer of exclusivity to the platform: lockable posts accessible only by entering a secret code.

The experimental feature was first spotted on the official Instagram Design profile, where select posts displayed a lock icon alongside a prompt reading “Enter secret code”. Instead of visible content, users encountered a gated screen, with access granted only upon entering the correct code.

This test signals Instagram’s growing interest in offering creators and brands tools to engage more targeted or private audiences—such as superfans, loyal customers, or region-specific communities. Potential uses could include exclusive behind-the-scenes content, limited-time offers, or updates tied to external subscriber lists or CRM data.

The concept builds on previous features like the ‘Reveal’ sticker in Stories, which required followers to send a direct message to unlock content. However, the new code-based system seems to shift the focus to off-platform interactions, allowing creators to distribute access codes via email newsletters, private groups, or paid communities—strengthening their control over who sees premium content.

Interestingly, the locked posts were only visible on desktop during this limited test. Observers also noted what appeared to be a test version of Meta’s Community Notes system on the same Instagram account, suggesting broader experimentation with community engagement tools.

Instagram has yet to officially comment on the feature, and it remains unclear whether the lockable posts functionality will see a wider rollout. A request for confirmation from Meta was made but had not received a response at the time of publication.
