New Delhi, 7 November 2025: Amazon is reportedly preparing to cut nearly 1,000 corporate jobs in India as part of its global restructuring drive, which will affect approximately 14,000 employees worldwide. The layoffs come as the tech giant sharpens its focus on artificial intelligence and operational efficiency, signaling one of its biggest internal overhauls to date.

Major Global Restructuring

As reported by The Economic Times, the upcoming layoffs in India will span across departments such as finance, human resources, marketing, and technology. Numerous employees from global teams will be affected by these layoffs. Sources indicate that this figure may rise as the restructuring moves forward in the upcoming months. Globally, the job cuts represent about 4% of Amazon’s 350,000-strong corporate and tech workforce.

The move is part of a sweeping cost-optimization effort under CEO Andy Jassy, who has been on a mission to make Amazon “leaner, faster, and more focused. In an internal communication, Jassy emphasized his long-term objective to simplify decision-making and remove unnecessary management levels. “We need to streamline layers, enhance accountability, and minimize red tape,” he remarked. His statement indicates a company-wide transition from growth during the pandemic to a post-pandemic adjustment that emphasizes profitability and innovation.

AI at the Heart of the Transformation

At the center of this restructuring lies Amazon’s ambition to lead the artificial intelligence revolution. The company has been investing heavily in generative AI, cloud-based intelligence tools, and automation capabilities across its e-commerce, AWS, and logistics businesses.

“This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet,” stated Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology. “We believe we need to be structured more efficiently, with fewer tiers and greater accountability, to act swiftly for our customers and businesses.” The company believes that a flatter structure will allow faster innovation cycles and better integration of AI into everyday business operations, from personalized shopping experiences to smarter logistics and internal process automation.

Support for Affected Employees

In a company blog post, Galetti stated that Amazon is “working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted.” Affected employees will be given 90 days to find new roles within the company, and those unable to do so will receive severance pay, health benefits, and outplacement support.

Despite these assurances, the announcement has stirred uncertainty among Amazon’s workforce in India. Several employees, speaking on condition of anonymity, told local media that the mood has been tense since the first wave of restructuring announcements earlier this year. Many teams are reportedly being merged or downsized to align with Amazon’s global AI-first strategy.

The Broader Layoff Trend

This is not the first instance of Amazon reducing its workforce. In 2023, the company eliminated over 9,000 jobs internationally, with more than 500 of those in India. Since 2022, it has cut more than 27,000 roles around the world as part of an ongoing effort to address an overstaffing issue that arose during the pandemic boom.

Industry experts consider the move to be part of a broader trend among major technology firms worldwide. This year, firms like Google, Meta, and Microsoft have also implemented similar job reductions, reallocating resources and personnel towards AI innovation and infrastructure development.

“AI is reshaping not just products but also organizational structures, and companies are realizing they need fewer people doing repetitive roles and more people developing, managing, and optimizing AI systems.” said tech analyst Ritesh Bhattacharya.

India’s Strategic Role

Even as job cuts loom, Amazon remains committed to its India operations, one of its fastest-growing markets globally. Amazon Seller Services, Amazon Pay, and Amazon Transport Services all narrowed losses in FY25, aided by tighter cost controls and lower marketing spending.

The company continues to bet big on areas like quick commerce, AWS cloud expansion, and local language AI models to cater to India’s diverse user base. Amazon is also reportedly exploring deeper integration of AI in seller management, delivery route optimization, and customer personalization.

The Road Ahead

CEO Andy Jassy has been open about how AI will change employment at Amazon. “We will require fewer workers for some current roles, while more workers will be needed for different positions,” he recently informed employees. This statement highlights a broader reality—while automation will take over certain tasks, it will also generate new roles in developing fields. Although the layoffs represent a challenging period for many staff members, Amazon perceives this reorganization as a tactical initiative to maintain an advantage in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
